Ando's joy brings up an old taboo
The morning after TV Asahi's evening news show "Hodo Station" ran an interview with figure skater Miki Ando on July 1, the media was buzzing over the revelation that Ando had given birth in April. The baby was not the ostensible reason for the interview, which focused on her athletic activities, and the way Ando referred to the event made it seem as if TV Asahi didn't know about it beforehand, which is possible but difficult to believe. Ando may have done the interview at least partly to get the news of the birth out of the way before she starts training for a slot at the Sochi Olympics, and in that regard she was wise to choose "Hodo Station," which is more discreet than the morning shows. In any case, she had to expect the reaction that followed since it was clear from the conversation that she is not married at present.

Media barge into royal baby's life before it's born
Outside the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital, the global media hordes on Royal Baby Watch have marked their turf with duct tape and stepladders like so many predators. But starved for material in a world where Mother Nature and Buckingham Palace are the last two holdouts from the 24-hour news cycle, loitering reporters trying to set a tone of breathless anticipation have resorted to interviewing each other.

Children of the 1960s will pay a higher price
To some, it must have been a very long time coming but here it is at last. That smug, gold-plated, bloated slice of the population, whose main preoccupation appears to be, on the one hand, continually bragging about their unique birthright of rock 'n' roll, flower power, feminism and the sexual revolution while on the other grabbing jobs, income and bread from the mouths of their young, are running into trouble.

Biiiiig baby! — Japanese get taller and skinnier, but not bigger
"How old do you think those kids are?" Asked my father, admiring the cute little American tots standing in line at the ski lift. They were dressed in the puffy ski outfits of the latest fashionable shade of kindergarten pastel, making them look like they were wrapped in cotton candy. Snuggly fit around their middles was a rope with a handle affixed at the back so their instructor could lift them up onto the ski lift, or pick them up from the snow when they fell.

Kick-starting green energy
The Upper House on Aug. 26 unanimously enacted an electricity feed-in-tariff scheme law under which Japan's 10 power companies, in principle, will be required to purchase all of the electricity generated through renewable energy sources for long periods at prices advantageous to operators of green energy facilities. The law will go into effect on July 1, 2012.
