Tsunami-hit city in Miyagi to receive grant to restore historic buildings
The World Monuments Fund said Thursday that it will give $250,000 to rebuild seven historic buildings in the Miyagi Prefecture port of Kesennuma, which was devastated by tsunami from the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Nuclear safety body touts voluntary measures
Utilities were unwilling to voluntarily improve safety at their nuclear plants before the Fukushima crisis erupted, but the chairman of the Japan Nuclear Safety Institute, an entity aimed at monitoring efforts by power firms to improve atomic safety, is determined to change that mindset.

Worried Fukushima cops considered fleeing posts after 3/11
Many Fukushima police officers struggled with fears of death and thought about fleeing when they were evacuating citizens from areas close to Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant during the catastrophe that started in March 2011, according to a survey.

Power of poetry penned by survivors of 3/11 is showcased by ASIJ project
Kathy Krauth, a social studies teacher at the American School in Japan, admits she was never a huge fan of tanka, traditional Japanese poetry. "Tanka never really spoke to me. I dismissed it as early Japanese history with cherry blossoms." That all changed when Krauth sat in a classroom at the University of Colorado, Boulder, last July, inspired by the power of poetry penned by survivors of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

State to build 20,000 housing units in disaster-hit areas by March 2016
The government said Thursday that it will build nearly 20,000 public housing units by March 2016 for people affected by the March 2011 megaquake-tsunami disaster in the Tohoku region and consequent nuclear crisis.
