Foreign media pumped up fears

The international media should hang their collective heads in shame at the way they've reported the unfolding tragedy in Japan. It's an old cliche, but now that I live on the other side of the fence, it seems all the more clear: The media are willing to whip up more panic and put more people in danger...

Instances of under-reporting, too

I agree that some foreign media outlets have sensationalized this story, but at the same time, I agree with those members of the Western media who say the Japanese media have under-reported and, in many cases, merely spewed numbers and reports provided to them by the government.

Danger better suited for robots

I always used to wonder why Japanese technologists and scientists were so busy making robots for playing violins, playing with kids, playing football and the like, but not robots that could handle situations like the one at the Fukushima nuclear plant. There are many brave people right now fighting a...

Choices must not divide friends

I spoke with a Scottish friend over the weekend. He had left Tokyo with a group of friends while other friends had chosen to remain behind. As we chatted, he reflected on the friendships that had become strained over the Fukushima nuclear plant crisis. Even the relationship with his best friend soured,...

Place your bid to help Japan

When the world bears witness to tragedies on the scale of Japan's recent disaster, it affects everyone, and it is natural to feel powerless. Many find themselves asking the question: "What could I possibly do to help?" While for most the answer is not at once apparent, for Japanese American ceramic artist...

Images from disaster in Tohoku lend visual wallop to narrative

NEW YORK — Sometimes it's a fast-moving ooze: A street becomes a stream, grows into a river and then a raging mountain of moving debris. Sometimes, it's a wet curtain of water crashing over a shoreline, tossing trees, ships and cars casually aside as a child would a stack of Lego.

Yen surge not as strange as it sounds

What the yen surge really points to that the world has confidence in the Japanese economy based on its underlying strength.

Longform

After the asset-price bubble crash of the early 1990s, employment at a Japanese company was no longer necessarily for life. As a result, a new generation is less willing to endure a toxic work culture —life’s too short, after all.
