The sister of a teenager who was killed in the 1994 sarin gassing in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, was abducted Tuesday morning in Chiba Prefecture but freed uninjured 12 hours later in Nagoya, police said Wednesday.

The abduction victim, a 19-year-old college student, is the sister of Yuta Abe, who was among seven people killed in the gas attack allegedly perpetrated by Aum Shinrikyo, which also injured 144.

Police said the woman was apparently subdued with chloroform by a man immediately after leaving home in Narashino, Chiba Prefecture, at around 8 a.m., and taken to a car where she was blindfolded.

Inside the car, the man told her, "If you die now, you die at the same age as your brother," according to police. Her brother was 19 when he was killed.

Police said the sister, whose first name was withheld, was allowed to leave the car at around 8:30 p.m. on a Nagoya street, behind a police station.

The man told her to "keep looking down" before leaving the area, according to police. The woman asked for help and was taken into custody by police.

On June 15, the college coed had been threatened inside an elevator on campus in Tokyo by a stranger who demanded her family withdraw from a damages suit against Aum.

Her father, Kazuyoshi Abe, 57, is a plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking compensation from Aum.

Since the elevator incident, police had dispatched officers to protect her, but the protection stopped when the college entered summer break on July 9, they said.

Abe also received a phone call in June from a man who identified himself as an Aum member and demanded he withdraw from the trial.

"I would understand if (the abductor) targeted me. But why target my daughter? I am furious," Abe said, adding that he has no intention of ending the litigation.

"If Aum is involved in the case, why do they have to do this? This is another mysterious incident," Abe said.

Because his daughter was abducted after police stopped protection, Abe said the culprit seems to have been following her activities.

"It is very eerie. I want police to solve this case as soon as possible," he added.
