Ryosei Akazawa, Japan's chief tariff negotiator, has noted certain limitations in the agreement he signed last week that commits Japan to bankroll $550 billion of investments chosen by U.S. President Donald Trump and operated by the United States.

During a news conference on Tuesday, he pointed out that, according to the terms of the memorandum of understanding underpinning the pledge, Japan cannot finance any project that contravenes its laws or is unrelated to Japan.

“We believe strategic considerations and legal constraints will be appropriately taken into account in the process," he said.
