The well-organized rites of spring
Time to head out into the sunshine Though the sakura (cherry blossom) festivities have just passed, spring is still in the air, and as the weather warms up we can expect brighter skies. With that comes lots of sunshine, which means for those of us with sensitive skin it's that time to search out the parasols.

Designing with the grain
For kids branching out to art Last year, Kana Nakanishi caught our attention with Koke-a, an unusual piece of furniture with a mosslike surface of tufted wool on which to relax — her graduate project for Finland's Alto University of Art and Design. Now she's a member of Oiseau, which has launched Mother, a new brand that focuses on long-lasting products. Nakanishi's contribution is the Atelier Book Chair, a fun art box for kids. The beautiful wooden set is a carrying case — to store art supplies — that conveniently opens up into a stool with hanging pockets to hold art brushes, paints and other young artist's needs. The Atelier Book Chair costs ¥50,000 and can be ordered directly from the Oiseau website.

A well-designed reason to celebrate
Tokyo celebrates good design It's that time of year again when Tokyo hosts its biggest design festival. From Oct. 29 to Nov. 3, the streets of Aoyama and nearby areas will be offering the public a taste of what's new in household goods, furniture, jewelry and more. This time, Tokyo Designers Week, which is again being held at the Jingu Gaien grounds near Gaienmae station, celebrates its 25th year and its 100% Design Tokyo exhibition has changed its concept to become the Environmental Design Exhibition. Included are a wide variety of shows and events, as well as numerous related seminars and workshops. Be sure to check out the Cool Japan Tokyo Conference and this year's Container Exhibition.

Design for keeping everything warm and just so
Drastic desk changes Hopefully you're still keeping your New Year's resolutions, and if one of them was to pay more attention to the little things in life, such as your desk space, then the latest from Japanese stationery brand Craft Design Technology can help fulfill those good intentions. Released as part of the brand's autumn/winter collection, "Drastic Change Series," this classy line of leather desk accessories includes a memo-pad case (¥7,800), business card case (¥8,500), and a pen sheath (¥6,800). Each item is available with contrasting exterior/ interior color combinations — hence the "drastic" naming — of white and black, black and white, and brown and green.
