Hideki Matsuyama finished 11th at the Northern Trust Open on Sunday, faltering in his bid to become the first Japanese to win back-to-back PGA Tour titles.

Matsuyama left the clubhouse three shots behind overnight leader Bubba Watson, but carded a 1-over 72 in the final round for an 8-under 276 total — seven strokes back of champion Watson, who won for a career ninth time.

Matsuyama cancelled five birdies with six bogeys at Riviera, where he was a narrow fourth last season, just one stroke out of first.

"I made mistakes just when I thought I'd get going and could never get into a rhythm," Matsuyama said. "The shots felt all right but I didn't know what was what with my putts. I backed myself into a corner so it's quite frustrating."
