Japan's two-time double Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima failed to qualify for this summer's world championships in the 100-meter breaststroke after finishing third at the national championships on Wednesday.

Yasuhiro Koseki defended his title in the event in a time of 59.73 seconds. Ryo Tateishi was second in 1:00:04, pipping Kitajima for the worlds by 0.14.

Ryosuke Irie won the men's 100 backstroke in 52.99, with Masaki Kaneko taking second and clearing the qualifying standard in 53.56.

Natsumi Hoshi topped the women's 100 butterfly, but her time of 58.62 was not good enough to book her a ticket to the July 24-Aug. 9 worlds in Kazan, Russia.
