Seina Imamura set a Japan Racing Association record for most wins in a year by a female jockey with her 44th on Sunday at Niigata racecourse.

On Saturday, the 18-year-old rookie tied Nanako Fujita's 43 wins from 2019 in her fourth year as a jockey.

Imamura set the record in Sunday's second race in Niigata aboard Festes Band, and extended it to 45 by winning the eighth race.

"I could rack up this many wins thanks to the support of many people," said Imamura. "I was allowed to keep riding despite having races with mistakes and I'm grateful for that."

Imamura said 25-year-old Fujita had been her inspiration, something she wants to be herself for future stars.

"I strongly felt I wanted to be a jockey because of Fujita," she said. "It will motivate me if girls around my younger sister's age start wanting to be jockeys."

A native of Shiga Prefecture, Imamura grew up around horses as the daughter of former JRA jockey Yasunari Imamura. She entered JRA jockey school in 2019 after graduating from junior high school and made her debut this past March 5.

Imamura won her first race eight days later, and became the first female jockey to win her graded race debut, at the July 3 Grade 3 CBC Sho in Kitakyushu.
