Shohei Ohtani had multiple hits for the third straight game, but the Los Angeles Angels' four-game winning run ended Tuesday in a 7-4 loss to the New York Yankees.

Batting third as the designated hitter, Ohtani struck out swinging in his first two trips to the plate but singled in the sixth and legged out a double in the ninth, when he came home on a Taylor Ward single for the final run at Angel Stadium.

Ohtani, the 2021 American League MVP who is in the discussion for this year's award along with Yankees slugger Aaron Judge, strung together three multi-hit games for the first time this season.

Although his offense slumped last year in the second half, Ohtani has a .320 batting average since Aug. 1 with seven home runs. He is fourth among AL hitters with 29 home runs and fifth among AL pitchers with 176 strikeouts.

Angels starting pitcher Mike Mayers (1-1) allowed seven runs, five earned, through four innings.

With the game tied 2-2 in the third with two outs and the bases loaded, Angels third baseman Luis Rengifo dove to make a good stop, but his one-hop throw to first was not caught and two runs scored on the throwing error.

Judge went 3-for-5, and launched his league-leading 51st homer in the fourth with two on. The Yankees right fielder also leads the AL with 104 runs, 113 RBIs and 76 walks.

In Toronto, Seiya Suzuki batted cleanup and also went 2-for-4 as the Chicago Cubs lost their fourth straight game, 5-3 to the Blue Jays.

It was the first time Suzuki, who singled in the second and the fourth had multiple hits in consecutive games since July 4 and 5.
