Japan won both the men's and women's team events at the world junior table tennis championships for players aged 18 and under on Saturday.

In the women's final, Rio Olympic bronze medalist Mima Ito alongside Miu Hirano and Hina Hayata defeated five-time defending world champion China 3-1 in Cape Town.

With Japan leading 2-1 after three singles matches, ace Ito beat Shi Xunyao in straight sets to claim her second win of the day to clinch Japan's second junior women's title, first since 2010.

"I'm very happy. It had been my and Japan's aim to win at the junior worlds," said Ito, who helped her country win bronze at Rio de Janeiro in August together with Ai Fukuhara and Kasumi Ishikawa.

"It was refreshing because we all worked hard for the title," the 16-year-old said of her teammates in Cape Town. "I was lucky in the last match. I really enjoyed the matches today."

Sixteen-year-old Hayata, who beat Sun Yizhen in the third match to give Japan the lead, said, "It will give me confidence that I was able to contribute with one win. I was up next at 1-1 and thought I must win and pass the baton to Mima."

In the men's final, Yuto Kizukuri, Tomokazu Harimoto and Yuki Matsuyama each won a match to breeze past South Korea 3-0, which had downed 10-time defending titleholder China in the semifinals.

"I'm happy to win the gold medal," said Matsuyama, who defeated Kim Dae-woo in the third match to give Japan its first men's title since 2005. "It was a good match. I'm glad I was able to perform everything I've worked on."
