Title contenders Nick Kyrgios and Gael Monfils won their first matches of the Japan Open on Tuesday, both casually disposing of their lowly ranked opponents in straight sets.

Traveling well at a career-high 15th in the world, the 21-year-old Australian Kyrgios played with a self-assured freedom in his 7-5, 6-2 win over American world No. 107 Ryan Harrison, while second seed Monfils took apart Yuichi Sugita 6-3, 6-1.
