Kurumi Nara earned a spot in the second round at the Taiwan Open on Tuesday, while a pair of compatriots made early exits in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Nara, ranked 89th in the world, dispatched 94th-ranked Wang Qiang of China 6-1, 6-3 in just over an hour. Wang made four double faults and Nara dominated Wang's 19 second serves, winning 14 of them at Yang-Ming Tennis Center.

It was not such an easy day for 18-year-old Naomi Osaka, who advanced through qualifying to reach the third round of last month's Australian Open. Osaka, ranked 112th, lost 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) to Mandy Minella of Luxumborg.

Ayaka Okuno, who qualified for the main draw, pushed sixth seed Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan to three sets, losing 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-2.
