Japan's Nozomi Okuhara and Kento Momota captured the women's and men's singles titles respectively at the BWF Super Series Masters Final on Sunday, becoming the first Japanese singles winners in the tournament's history.

The 20-year-old Okuhara, in her first appearance in the year-ending tournament, defeated London 2012 silver medalist Wang Yihan of China in straight-games, 22-20, 21-18.

Okuhara, ranked ninth in the world, overcame the world No. 8 Wang. Okuhara's rise in 2015 has been meteoric, having reached the world top 10 after being ranked 25th to start the year.

"Really, I'm so happy. Today's game was the toughest," said Okuhara, who won the junior world championship three years ago. "My legs stopped midway through (the match) and I was losing heart, but in the end I just fought with determination to win it."

Okuhara shocked world No. 1 Carolina Marin of Spain 21-11, 21-12 in the semifinals on Saturday. She had also beaten Marin a day earlier in straight sets (21-9, 21-15) in the group stage and made it five wins out of five en route to her maiden title.

Momota, 21, ranked fifth, overcame Denmark's world No. 6 Viktor Axelsen in straight sets (21-15, 21-12).

"Winning this really big tournament is really pleasing," said Momota, who alongside Okuhara also won the junior world championship three years ago.

"There's Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo to come so hopefully (Okuhara and I) can keep striving together," said Momota.
