Defender Atsuto Uchida has had right knee surgery in Japan and will remain in the country for six weeks to rehabilitate, his German Bundesliga club Schalke announced on Wednesday.

Uchida, who has long been suffering from pain in the knee, had a procedure performed on the patellar tendon. It is not clear when the surgery took place or how long he will be sidelined, but after his initial rehabilitation it is said that he will return to Germany.
