Yoshihide Kiryu could miss the athletics world championships in August in Beijing after Toyo University said Wednesday that the sprinter will be unable to train for six weeks due to a right hamstring strain.

According to the university, Kiryu sustained the injury last Saturday while training and it is highly unlikely that he will be able to take part in the national championships at the end of June in Niigata. The nationals serve as the qualifying trial for the world championships.

The 19-year-old, who owns the second fastest national record of 10.01 seconds in the men's 100 meters, will miss the seventh meeting of the Diamond League in New York on June 13.
