Tokyo's main stadium for the 2020 Olympics would be the same arena that was the focal point of the 1964 Summer Games in Tokyo — the National Stadium.
In the application to host the 2020 Summer Games submitted to the International Olympic Committee on Monday, the Tokyo bid committee said the National Stadium would undergo major renovation to hold a crowd of 80,000. Its current capacity is 54,000.
In the 2016 bid which it lost to Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo had included a new Olympic stadium to be built by the bay in the Harumi waterfront district.
The IOC, however, pointed out that site was too inconvenient. The National Stadium, located in the city center, is widely regarded as one of the most accessible sports venues in Tokyo.
Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekaze Takeda was confident of the file his team had put together.
"It is a plan that will be a lasting legacy for 50 years," Takeda told Kyodo News.
