Uchimura cruises to another title

Double world champion Kohei Uchimura won his third straight men’s all-around title at the Japan Cup with a dominating mark of 93.150 on Sunday.

Uchimura had the highest score in all six disciplines, finishing a comfortable 3.650 points ahead of China’s Liao Qiuhua to top the podium on the second and final day of the meet.

“I think I did pretty well today,” Uchimura said. “I didn’t make any major mistakes and stuck my landing. I’ll just try to keep improving. I believe I can do even better.”

It was a lot closer in the women’s competition as Koko Tsurumi became the first Japanese female to win the all-around title at the Japan Cup.

The 18-year-old Tsurumi scored 56.100, edging China’s Sui Lu by 0.100 for the victory.

“Things turned out great after I came out with a nothing-to-lose mindset,” Tsurumi said. “It’s really a confidence boost because I had a good performance at the world championship venue.”
