Tuffy Rhodes drove in the go-ahead run with a double to right field in the eighth inning Friday to lift the Yomiuri Giants to a 7-5 win over the Yokohama BayStars.

Rhodes’ drive to the right field corner at Tokyo Dome off Yokohama reliever Takaharu Kato allowed the go-ahead run to score. Yoshinobu Takahashi then added an insurance run with a single to center that scored Rhodes from second before the Giants scored two more runs to take a 7-3 lead.

Tyrone Woods hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth to narrow the gap before Brian Sikorski retired the side to seal the victory.

Dragons 2, Tigers 0

At Nagoya Dome, Motonobu Tanishige drove in a pair of runs with a double to right in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Chunichi over Hanshin.

Veteran left-hander Masahiro Yamamoto picked up the win after holding the Tigers to five hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings. Hitoki Iwase retired the side in the ninth for the save.

PACIFIC LEAGUE

Hawks 6, BlueWave 1

At Yahoo BB Stadium, Tsuyoshi Wada struck out nine and tossed a four-hitter over the distance to lead Daiei over Orix.

Yukio Deguchi drove in a pair of runs with a clutch double in the top of the fifth when the Hawks scored three runs to take a 6-0 lead.

Trey Moore (5-3), a former pitcher with the Hanshin Tigers last season, got rocked for six runs — two unearned — in five innings in taking the loss.

Gaillard sidelined

YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) Yokohama BayStars right-hander Eddie Gaillard has been diagnosed with inflammation in the elbow of his throwing arm, team officials said Friday.

Gaillard, who has been removed from the active roster, could be traveling home to the United States for further examinations, depending on the opinion of his doctor in the United States.

The former Cincinnati Reds player has a 2-2 record with an 8.31 ERA in 13 games this season.
