Japan's men's team secured a place at this summer's Athens Olympics on Wednesday after finishing seventh in the team sprint heats at the Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne.

Tomohiro Nagatsuka, Toshiaki Fushimi and Kiyofumi Nagai recorded a combined time of 45.219 seconds and guaranteed themselves a ticket to Greece by finishing inside the top 10 in the heats and advancing to the first round.

Makoto Iijima will be competing in the men's points race final later Wednesday at the five-day event, which doubles as an Olympic qualifier.
