Secom kept alive its, albeit slim, hopes of reaching the last eight of the 55th Company Clubs Rugby Football Championship with a 26-19 win over Coca Cola West Japan at a cold, wet and miserable Chichibunomiya Stadium in Tokyo on Saturday.
However, while the win has probably done enough to earn the team a spot in next year's new professional league, the Top League, it will require a marked improvement in its performance if it is to get by Toshiba Fuchu on Jan. 5 and earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the company tournament.
On a day of English-like weather, it was perhaps appropriate that the boot dominated proceedings. Tatsuya Nagai kicked four penalties from four attempts and Yusuke Tsuyashima and Feleti Mahoni converted tries as Secom ensured that Coca Cola would remain in the West Japan League next season.
