In the Jan. 22 "View from the street," one of those questioned wanted to know why Greenpeace was only interested in whales and not cows. There is no humane way to kill a whale, the animal must be tortured to death with harpoons.
I worked for a few years in a slaughterhouse and can state from personal observation that cows are dispatched rapidly and with relatively little pain. Also, cows are not even close to being an endangered species. I believe that the world's population of cows is guaranteed for generations to come.
I lived in Japan for eight years during the 1960s and ate and enjoyed whale meat the whole time. If a humane way of slaughter can be devised and there is no chance of driving the whales into extinction, I would gladly eat it once again. At present, it does not appear on my menu.
