Japanese and major American animation studios, including HBO Max and Amazon, have unwittingly hired undercover North Korean IT workers, deployed by the hermit state as part of a sophisticated sanctions evasion tactic to finance its military might, a new multi-government report said Wednesday.

The Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team, which is made up of Japan, the U.S., Australia, France, Canada, Italy, New Zealand, Germany, the United Kingdom, South Korea and the Netherlands, sounded the alarm on North Korea’s sanctions evasion tactics, including stealing billions of dollars by hacking into cryptocurrency exchanges worldwide, in a detailed 138-page report.

According to the 11 nations, North Korean IT workers have been identified working in Japan, the U.S., the United Arab Emirates and Ukraine, using a strategy to secure employment and remit earnings back to North Korea.
