The U.S. State Department plans to deploy an officer to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo to monitor problematic behavior involving China and consider countermeasures from July, a department official said Saturday.
The United States will collect more information about China's coercive activities in cooperation with the Japanese government.
The department has set up the Office of China Coordination, informally known as China House, to supervise the United States' policy on China. The planned officer will work under China House.
Nearly 20 such officers have been dispatched to U.S. embassies abroad, according to data from the department.
Information on China's problematic behavior is shared among the officers and sent to the U.S. government. They also work with the governments of countries where they are dispatched.
The dispatch of officers regarding China affairs is a State Department program launched by the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, according to U.S. media.
