Nearly a month after China and Hong Kong banned seafood imports from Japan, scallops and other marine products from Hokkaido that were supposed to be shipped to China are piling up in freezers with nowhere else to go.

Scallops are amassing in freezers at processing facilities in Hokkaido, costing businesses more for storage, such as electricity costs and transportation to other factories, according to a report by the prefectural government published Friday.

Chinese customs data showed Monday that seafood imports from Japan dived 67.6% from a year earlier in August.
