Sendai Mayor Emiko Okuyama believes Tohoku's experiences with the March 2011 disaster s could help save lives worldwide.

She wants to share some of the lessons learned from the tsunami and mega-quake at an international conference in the city next year.

"Although Sendai is still on the path to recovery, in view of the tremendous international support we have received we feel it is our responsibility to communicate to the world our experiences in the disaster, the lessons we have learned and the story of our revival in the sincere hope that our insights will prove useful in disaster risk reduction efforts elsewhere," she told an audience at the United Nations on Thursday.
