Japan and the Philippines have agreed to step up cooperation in information technology so the Southeast Asian country will be better equipped to cope with disasters, Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Yoshitaka Shindo said.

Shindo, visiting the Philippines, made the agreement Monday with Mario Montejo, secretary of the Department of Science and Technology of the Philippines.

Japan will make available to the Philippines its standard for digital terrestrial broadcasting, considered resilient to disaster.
