If all of the nation's 50 nuclear reactors remain idled, Kansai Electric Power Co. and two other utilities probably won't be able to meet maximum demand for electricity in August, even if businesses and households in their service areas reduce power usage, according to estimates by nine utilities.

Kepco said its supply will fall 16.3 percent below maximum demand in August. Hokkaido Electric Power Co. and Kyushu Electric Power Co. reported probable supply shortages of 3.1 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively.

Kansai Electric also said power demand in July is expected to exceed its supply capacity by 19.3 percent.
