Strong winds lashed Tokyo and its vicinity Saturday, suspending rail services, including on shinkansen lines, and disrupting flights.
Wind gusts of up to 106.2 kph were recorded in Chiba around 3 p.m., and up to 102.6 kph in central Tokyo shortly after noon, according to the Meteorological Agency.
East Japan Railway Co. said it temporarily suspended services on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line between Ueno and Omiya, affecting about 12,000 passengers, and also halted local trains on the Joban Line and the Keiyo Line, which carries visitors to Tokyo Disneyland.
Meanwhile, more than 10 flights bound for Narita airport in Chiba Prefecture were diverted to other destinations, including Kansai airport in Osaka Prefecture, according to Narita's operator.
The strong winds also forced authorities to close the Tokyo Gate Bridge for six hours and the Tokyo Bay Aqualine expressway linking Kawasaki and Chiba Prefecture's Kisarazu for seven hours.
