Ueno Zoo has confirmed that the two giant pandas in its care have mated.

The zoo said it confirmed that the male panda Ri Ri and the female Shin Shin had mated in an outdoor enclosure after Shin Shin showed signs of excitement in a matchmaking meeting Sunday.

Officials suspended showing the animals to the public and said they would decide whether to resume public viewing on Wednesday after observing their condition Tuesday.

The pandas have been on lease from China since February 2011. Both are 6 years old, or about 20 years old in human terms. The last time a cub was produced at Ueno Zoo was in 1988.
