Shanghai police are searching for a man who slashed the face of a Japanese university student on a crowded downtown street in what was apparently a random attack, local media reported Sunday.

According to the Shanghai Daily, Yuka Abe, a 22-year-old student at Fudan University, said she was walking to an intersection near People's Square on Friday night when a male stranger suddenly jumped out of the crowd, punched her in the face and cut her with a blade.

She reportedly needed seven stitches to close the wound. The man was described as unshaven and about 1.7 meters tall with long, dirty hair and dirty clothes.
