KDDI Corp. said Thursday it will set up a foothold in Sendai in February to register and manage cellphone customer data as part of efforts to generate employment in the region, which was ravaged by the March 11 quake and tsunami.

It will hire up to 700 residents at the center.

"We need to set up the center to deal with a growing number of subscriptions for tablets such as smartphones," KDDI Chairman Tadashi Onodera said at a news conference in Sendai. "Considering the issue of employment, we have determined Sendai would be the best place."

"Securing employment is the primary concern in the disaster-hit area. We feel very grateful," Sendai Mayor Emiko Okuyama said.
