The Nagoya Central Wholesale Market in Atsuta Ward is closing its doors to tourists while the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, better known as COP10, is held at the neighboring Nagoya Congress Center through Oct. 29.

Officials are hoping to avoid the kind of chaos that hit the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo this spring when crowds of foreign tourists came flooding in, disturbing fishermen, buyers and other workers. As a precaution, the Nagoya market has upped security around the clock at all five entry gates.

Visitors are normally accepted on weekdays. They are escorted on a tour after watching a PR video about the market's activities, including auctions.
