Softbank Mobile Corp. ranked first in net gains of new mobile phone subscriptions in May for the second month in a row, winning 251,100 contracts, according to data released by cell phone carriers.

The company’s successful month was in large part because it provides 3G mobile data connections for the Apple iPad tablet computer, which went on sale in May, while the iPhone it sells remains popular, industry analysts say.
