Pork exports to Hong Kong have resumed after being suspended due to the discovery last month of foot-and-mouth disease in pigs and cows in Miyazaki Prefecture, the agriculture ministry said.

Hong Kong authorities agreed to resume the imports from Japan after Tokyo explained measures to prevent the spread of the disease, the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said late Monday.

Hong Kong will accept pork produced outside the areas where the movement and removal of livestock are restricted.

Pork exports to Hong Kong totaled about 129 tons in 2009, valued at ¥132 million, the ministry said.

Beef and pork exports were suspended April 20 after reports of foot-and-mouth disease in some cows in Miyazaki.

Beef exports to Hong Kong resumed April 30.
