The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency posted images on its Web site Tuesday of astronaut Soichi Noguchi engaging in the traditional New Year’s customs of “hanetsuki” and “kakizome” aboard the International Space Station.

Wearing a traditional costume, Noguchi, 44, used battledores, or “hagoita,” to hit a shuttlecock, showing off his hanetsuki skills.
