Nintendo Co. lowered its earnings outlook for fiscal 2009 Thursday after double-digit falls in both sales and profit in the April to September first half of the year amid sluggish sales of its Wii and DS game consoles.

The Kyoto-based game creator now forecasts ¥230 billion in group net profit for the current fiscal year to next March 31, down 17.6 percent from the previous year, and ¥370 billion in operating profit, down 33.4 percent. Sales are projected to drop 18.4 percent to ¥1.5 trillion.

In the first six months of fiscal 2009, Nintendo booked a net profit of ¥69.49 billion, down 52.0 percent from a year earlier, and an operating profit of ¥104.36 billion, down 58.6 percent, on a 34.5 percent fall in sales to ¥548.06 billion.
