MIYAZAKI (Kyodo) A 10-ton truck carrying letters and packages that were being transported from Miyazaki Prefecture to elsewhere in Japan caught fire Monday as it pulled into a rest area in Kumamoto Prefecture.

No one was injured, but the truck and its contents were destroyed. The fire is believed to have been caused by a mechanical failure, the police said.

According to the Kyushu branch of Japan Post Service Co. and the police, the truck driver heard a strange sound and pulled off the Kyushu Expressway into the Midorikawa rest area to check on the problem.

As soon as the truck stopped, flames erupted from behind the left rear wheel, they said.
