The market for search engine online advertisements is expected to grow to ¥193.5 billion in fiscal 2013, up about threefold from fiscal 2005, the communications ministry said Thursday.

The sharp growth is likely as a substantial number of surveyed companies recognize the effectiveness of such ads, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.

These online ads appear on the personal computer screen when users punch in key words in a search engine to find necessary information. Ads seen on cell phone screens are excluded from the survey.

The ads formed a market of ¥124.5 billion in fiscal 2008, up from ¥59 billion in fiscal 2005. They are expected to become comparable with radio ads, currently worth ¥154.9 billion, in fiscal 2010.
