University specialists have started conducting research on two surgical methods to treat hepatoma, a tumor of the liver common in East Asia.

The study started this year by specialists at the University of Tokyo and others compares conventional surgical techniques to remove cancerous tissue from the liver in early stages of development with radio-frequency ablation, or RFA, a medical procedure in which surgeons insert a needle into the liver to destroy the abnormal tumor or tissue using heat.

Many instances of the disease in its early stages of development are reported to have been discovered in Japan.
