NEW YORK (Kyodo) It's 9 a.m. Sunday in New York, and the streets as usual are almost empty. Few people in the Big Apple choose to be up this early on a weekend, let alone cleaning, but for Terry Sato and his Japanese volunteers, sweeping the streets is a pleasure.

Sato and 14 others are stretching in the West Village, on West 4th and Avenue of the Americas, indifferent to the light rain.

Most people are still indoors, save for a few joggers and dog-walkers. Traffic is sparse. The bars are closed and most restaurants still haven't opened.
