Group of Eight leaders are expected to pledge to bring about widespread use of new biofuels from nonfood materials as part of efforts to curb surging food prices, government sources said Tuesday.

The G8 leaders will stipulate in a special statement to be adopted at their summit next week in Hokkaido that their countries will make efforts to commercialize next-generation biofuels made from nonfood materials and to promote their widespread use, the sources said.

In the statement, the leaders from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and Russia will also likely urge food-exporting countries to lift export restrictions, they said.
