As it plays host to a series of international meetings on conservation, Japan will urge all greenhouse gas emitting nations, including developing countries, to take concrete action against climate change, Environment Minister Ichiro Kamoshita said Wednesday.
Kamoshita, who will chair a three-day Group of Eight ministerial meeting on the environment starting Saturday in Kobe, said an effective framework against reducing greenhouse gas emissions will only be achieved through the participation of all major polluting countries.
"The success of building the next framework against global warming relies heavily on how developed countries can collaborate with developing countries, including sponsoring energy-efficient technology and financial aid," he said.
Reaching an agreement between all nations "may hold severe difficulty but must be achieved," because gas emissions by industrialized countries will peak out in the coming decades, unlike emissions from rising economies, which will accelerate at an "extreme" pace, Kamoshita said.
