Cosmetics have uses that go beyond their age-old role as a beauty aid. These days, they are an important part of medical treatment for people disfigured by diseases or accidents.

Medical makeup artists say their goal is to help people with skin problems and other facial flaws gain self-confidence and develop a more positive outlook on life.

One such artist, Reiko Kazuki, has written many books, including "Rihabirimeiku Keshogaku" ("Cosmetology for Rehabilitation").
