Ten adults sit next to 10 fourth-graders on a one-on-one basis in a mathematics class at Mitaka Municipal No. 4 Elementary School in western Tokyo.

During the first 10 minutes, the adults appear hesitant, but they soon become active, helping the students understand how to do two-digit division.

When a few children raise their hands to answer a question by a teacher, the adults look at them as if they are encouraging their own children.
