A group of about 30 young Chinese visiting Japan to learn about earthquake research visited a memorial in Kobe on Saturday and prayed for the victims of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake.

The group, which includes Chinese high school students and young researchers from Beijing, Shanghai and other places, is visiting Japan through Aug. 8 at the invitation of the Seismological Society of Japan, society members said.

Along with 11 Kobe high school students, the Chinese students laid flowers in front of the memorial for the roughly 6,400 people who died in the earthquake, including 48 Chinese.
