The Oita and Kumamoto prefectural governments started checking poultry farms for any signs of bird flu Wednesday near a home hit by an outbreak of the disease.
Officials said a health worker who came into contact with the infected chickens developed a slight fever, but tests showed he does not have avian flu.
Two bantams kept as pets at the home in the town of Kokonoe were confirmed Tuesday to have had the bird flu virus.
