Pepperdine University in California on Thursday again denied it had awarded a degree to Democratic Party of Japan lawmaker Junichiro Koga.

The denial followed a visit by Koga to the university in Malibu to clear up whether he had been awarded a degree.

Koga is suspected of exaggerating his academic background during campaigning in his Fukuoka constituency for the House of Representatives election in November.

A Pepperdine spokesman told reporters after a meeting that the university has not changed its position that Koga attended the university but did not graduate. He said university officials spent about an hour going over Koga's records with the lawmaker.

Koga had also claimed on his Web site that he had studied at the University of California, Los Angeles. But on Wednesday, UCLA said he had never studied there.

The DPJ said Friday Koga had called from the U.S. to say the UCLA claim on his Web site was in fact a typing error.

Koga said he meant to say he studied at California State University, Los Angeles, the party said. Koga had also claimed on his Web site that he studied at California State University Bakersfield.

On Thursday, CSUB said Koga was enrolled as a student majoring in physical education for about 18 months from January 1977. CSUB also said Koga was a member of its tennis team in 1977 when the team won a California university championship.
