A memorial hall for victims of the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima displayed an American prisoner of war in its photo collection for the first time Sunday.

The photo of Cpl. John Long Jr., 27, was registered at the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall of Atomic Bomb Victims by Nathan Long, 34, who now lives in Tokyo. John was Nathan's great uncle.

He was aboard a B-24 bomber that was shot down over the Chugoku region of western Japan in July 1945. He was captured and taken to Hiroshima.

Nathan Long said he wants people who visit the hall to know that even Americans died in the atomic bombing.

The U.S. government has declared that 10 American POWs died in the Aug. 6 bombing, but none of their relatives had requested that they be registered at the hall.

The hall, opened in August 2002, keeps a collection of about 8,800 names and photographs of A-bomb victims who are registered at the request of the victims' kin.

"We welcome registrations regardless of nationality and position and want to reflect history accurately," a hall spokesman said.
