Joseph Nye, former U.S. assistant secretary of defense, is critical of the growing unilateralism of the United States.

Nye, currently a professor at Harvard University, says the U.S. is increasingly losing its "soft power" ability to persuade others to adopt its goals as a result of its unilateralist agenda.

He urges the U.S. to pursue a more multilateral approach, rely more on soft power and follow the wisdom of an owl -- which occupies the space between a dove and a hawk -- to cope with difficult issues, including the fight against terrorism.
